I know it's in the comments section, but I have to make a post out of it because I liked it so much. In regards to my post about elegance:

[3] Some westerners associate elegance with simplicity and consistency of design, focusing on the main or basic features of an object, its dignified gracefulness, or restrained beauty of style.

(I love the second and third definition.) On a forum the other day, some ladies were talking about things that made them feel elegant. The answers varied, and were things such as: a nice hair style, a pretty dress, being thin, or simply knowing that they were admired by someone special. Different things made these women feel "elegant". It inspired me to come up with a list of my own, and thought I would share it with you. (Please comment and share your list!)

Thoughts about modesty...

Going through an old notebook today I found these thoughts I scribbled down when trying to define modesty... leave a comment and let me know what you think about this definition.

"Modesty: Modesty comes first from the heart, then encompasses all aspects of dress, speech, and behavior. Modesty does not start with what you wear, and then affects your heart. Instead, it starts in your heart, and affects what you wear. A lady's behavior will follow the beliefs of her heart, just as her clothing will follow her attitude.

Modesty is a quietness of behavior. It is an attitude that does not demand unnecessary attention, or insist on constant praise. It is a worthy and chosen humility. It does not convey that the modest person isn't worthy of affection or praise, but simply that they do not demand it. "

Kind of abstract maybe, but please, share your definition of modesty with us!

Good news for skirt lovers!

Not that we always follow their advise, but I am going to post a quote from the NY Times Fashion & Style section. This is from the "Pulse" feature, September 16, 2008

"For the last few years, dresses have dominated stores and runways, but now skirts are back in the spotlight. This season's skirts are filled with visual detail: ruching, draping, tiers and texture in abundance."

Mind you, none of the skirts they featured I deemed appropriate enough to be called modest, but it's encouraging to know that the skirt itself is not being entirely rejected by our society. I don't think it ever will be, but I am hoping that it's popularity will continue increase. Even with the rise and fall of various trends, the skirt still holds it's place (along with the dress), as the most feminine and sophisticated article of clothing a woman can wear.

Michelle Obama celebrating the 4th of July!

Note the leggings thrown underneath her airy sundress for extra coverage (which by the way look very nice and sporty with her flats). Also loving the simple white sweater with 3/4 length sleeves. I think she has pulled off a very modest look here, and very occasion appropriate. The leggings and flats give her that care-free 4th of July look, while the feminine sundress helps her maintain that air of dignity and reserve. The sweater brings it up another level (although I think she took it off later on that day, but it was a nice thought).

I love the it! She pulls it off well. Don't know if she was purposefully thinking "How can I layer this so it will be more modest", but it's a nice little piece of MODest fashion inspiration for us all!

Sorry it has been so long since I posted here. We have been busy busy busy! This past weekend we took PaulinaCarmel.com on the road! We had a table at the Massachusetts/Rhode Island UPCI Ladies Conference! It went wonderfully! The ladies were all so exuberant to find modest clothing, and their support and encouragement was thrilling for us. I just have to say that I met some of the nicest ladies ever this weekend, and it was well worth the trip. Well, happy near year everyone! I am sorry that this blog has been so neglected. The new year always brings a fresh list of things to do, and I guess blogging didn't make it to the top of that list.

Andrea Chavarro, model and beauty pageant winner, loves fashion. But the Pembroke Pines, Fla., 14-year-old also likes to dress modestly.

That's why she wanted to join the South Florida chapter of a group called Pure Fashion, a program that trains girls ages 14 to 18 to model -- with an emphasis on modesty.

"It's like the answer to my prayers," said Andrea, a freshman at Everglades High School in Miramar, Fla., who refuses to accept modeling jobs that require her to wear revealing clothes.

"Right now she's a model," said Andrea's mother, Pilar Chavarro. "But I want her to be a role model."

As body-flaunting starlets like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan fall from grace, a move toward modesty is getting its own attention.

Pure Fashion, based in Atlanta with more than 20 chapters throughout the United States and internationally, is only one example of the push toward wholesome but stylish clothing.

"The fashions have become so much more risque and provocative over the last 10 years," said Brenda Sharman, Pure Fashion's national director.

The group offers practical guidelines for those who aspire to modesty: Shirts should be no lower than four fingers below the collarbone. Skirts and dresses should be no shorter than four fingers above the top of the kneecap. Neither bra straps nor panty lines should show.

Ciele Gutierrez, 15, of Miami, said she likes to shop at Hollister Co. and Abercrombie & Fitch but has a hard time finding modest clothes. So she'll pair a tank top with a sweater vest over it, or wear a tank under a lower-cut shirt.

For the South Florida fashion show earlier this year, some girls modeled casual or beach looks wearing Bermuda shorts -- a welcome trend for teens who don't want to show a lot of leg.

It's not an effort to keep women hidden at home or out of the workplace, organizers say, but rather a move to empower them with self-confidence.

"I really believe that if women understood the power of the way they look. ... If they used it properly and got dressed all the way and stayed dressed, we really could change the world," Sharman said.

Kina de Cordoba, 15, said after she participated in Pure Fashion last year, she started thinking about why she was dressing in certain ways.

"Did I pick this because I wanted guys to see me in it?" said the Our Lady of Lourdes Academy sophomore. "Now it's important to kind of present myself as a lady with dignity."

Like Pure Fashion, affiliated with a Catholic organization, most of the groups promoting modest-but-fashionable attire are rooted in faith.

Shade Clothing, a line that features undershirts for layering, grew out of the shopping frustrations of a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

And Funky Frum, an online clothing boutique, was created by a woman with "a commitment to a modest Jewish lifestyle."

On a group blog called Modestly Yours, 20 women "who value modesty in its various forms" comment on culture and current events.

The blog and the site that hosts it, www.modestyzone .net, were founded by author Wendy Shalit.

Her most recent book is called "Girls Gone Mild: Young Women Reclaim Self-Respect and Find It's Not Bad to Be Good."

Shalit said many girls want to find wholesome role models, but often find themselves ridiculed by people who say "She's a prude, she's repressed, she's not comfortable with her body."

"In a funny way, the good girl is the rebel because she's rebelling against these preconceptions," said Shalit, 32. "It's not coming from the peers. Very often it's coming from the baby boomer parents."

As a believer in modest fashion, I choose to wear only skirts (with few exceptions, like pajamas). Why I wear only skirts, is a long story that maybe I will write out one day, but simply put: Skirts, in our culture, are the higher form of modesty and femininity.

Aside from running an online store, I also have a part time job at a local clothing store, just to keep me out and about. At work we have a very dressy, professional, dress code. The ladies I work with, a sweet group of people, are always commenting on my skirt wearing. Customers as well. . At first, I think everyone was a bit confused about it. I got such comments as:

"Do you ever wear pants?"
"Do you wear capris?"
"How about gauchos?"
"Do you wear skirts because of your religion?"

Then came the justifications...

"Well, I'm a pants girl, just like you're a skirt girl!" :)
"I look terrible in skirts. You look so nice in them, but I am just too short"
"Oh, I love skirts, but I have to wear than in the winter with boots. My skin is far to pale to wear them in the summer!"

Then, people started imitating and accepting:

"I need some skirts, I haven't worn skirts in a long time..."
"Oh, Paulina, you should of been here yesterday, I had a skirt on!"
"Oooh, look at this skirt, don't you like this one?"
"I saw the prettiest skirt the other day..."

And the funny thing is...

Unless I was asked, I HAVE NEVER EVER mentioned anything about my skirt preference! Actions speak louder than words people, and when you carry your modesty convictions with confidence and style, you will be admired for it, and people will strive to imitate you. Be encouraged! People do notice the difference. It may be hard to be the one that stands out, but remember...it's worth it. One person can't change the world all at once, but you can affect another person, who affects another person, so forth and so on...

Be modest! Be stylish! Don't be afraid to stand apart! You will be respected all the more for it.

A call for modesty

We live in a world that treats the human body (especially a woman's body) like a piece of merchandise. Like something common, subject to scrutiny under the latest body-type trends, usable and reusable.

In advertisements it's used to sell everything from insurance, to alcohol, to vegetable dip, or toothpaste. In magazines, it's airbrushed and plastered without remorse onto full-page ads of a secret Victoria didn't guard so well. While women scream for rights, respect, and better treatment, our behavior speaks worlds of difference.

On top of that, what was sexy 30 years ago is toddler wear today. In a quest for "women's lib", women have degraded themselves more than before. There is no true beauty, no true dignity, and nothing shamefaced portrayed about women these days, even by women themselves.

Well girls, we need a new generation to take a stand.

Your peers are saying: If you don't show what you've got, you must not got it! Not the case. Your body should be treated like something special, sacred, unique, God-given, to glorify him with. Just because you don't want to show your cleavage ladies doesn't mean you are embarrassed of your self but, rather, you care more about yourselves then others. There is a call for modesty, now more then ever before. In this corrupt generation, if we don't take a stand for this, no one is going to take it for us. It's one person at a time, but it's all of us together.

Self conscious? Me? How about others conscoius?

Some sharing time...

Someone said to me the other day something about how I am always layering my tops and such because I am "self conscious". I thought she meant that negative sense, so I responded that I am "not self conscious", I just "don't like to show a lot of skin". (It's not like I button my blouses up to my chin or anything, I will just tend to slip a cami underneath a top if the neckline is too low or something.)

But anyway, after that comment I started thinking "How can people tell the difference? While I know that I am dressing to be modest, will other people think I am embarrassed of my body? Does it matter? Also, why did her comment bother me?"

To be self conscious simply means, to be conscious of self. I should hope that everyone has a conscious awareness of themselves, and that they exist, right? So if you are not self conscious I suggest that you take a look in the mirror.

Okay, now that we know we exist, let's turn it around. Let's be conscious of others. Because there are other people on this planet besides myself (As much as I sometimes think otherwise). That, after all, is why we wear clothing. That's the point of modesty. If you were the last person on earth, clothes wouldn't really matter, except for maybe being protection from the elements.

So here are some reason's why dressing modestly is others conscious...

Dressing modestly is less distracting in professional and church environments.
Dressing modestly is respectful of the men and boys around you. Being others conscious means not dressing in a way that will cause men (even good, honest, God-fearing men) to struggle with something they shouldn't have to. I could expand for hours on this, but, 'nuff said. :) Also, mothers, don't dress in a manner that accentuates your body and makes it the main focus if you want your boys to grow up and respect and honor women for who they are on the inside.
Dressing modestly puts you on good terms with other women. Let's face it, women are competitive. When women dress modestly there is a certain humility portrayed, as well as a confidence in who you are. Other women will be more likely to respect you for this as well as feel more comfortable with you being around their friends and family.
Dressing modestly protects children. Dressing modestly is a tremendous example to these children that look up to you as what they will become. But also, things aren't like they used to be. For many years children had one style of clothing, and when they reached a certain age of maturity they were allowed to graduate to more grown-up styles. Nowadays children expect to be able to wear almost anything that mommy wears. So if mommy is wearing a mini skirt and a halter top (and I've seen it folks), guess what baby is going to want to wear?

Just got back from a two day ladies' conference in Maine! We attended the Maine District UPCI Ladies' Retreat. It was exciting. It was the first time Paulina Carmel went on the road. We rented a booth and set up some inventory, brochures, and of course, a bowl of candy. It went well, and many people were excited to find out about a company that sells modest clothing. Long denim skirts, we were told, were so hard for these women to find, they were thrilled to meet us. I will post some pictures soon. Hopefully we will be able to do this again soon.

Special thanks to the beautiful ladies that helped me with my booth this weekend! And to my mother, I don't know what I would do without you!

Watching the latest trends I decided that PaulinaCarmel.com needed dresses. I know, I am a little slow with these things, I should have had dresses up about a month or two ago, but please know that this is all new to me.

Now, when I say dresses I don't mean outdated, ill-fitting, tacky dresses. No dresses that would hurt your wallet either. No dresses that are too short, or too see through, or sleeveless. Just some very cute, trendy, modest, springy dresses. So keep an eye out, because we will soon be adding a couple styles of dresses for juniors and ladies...I can't wait! As soon as they are photographed they will be online. If they sell well, we are considering adding more styles. Seeing as dresses are the latest trend, we just can't be left behind... :)

Oh so feminine...

I breath a sigh of relief as I look at some of this Springs fashions. It's actually in style for women to look like women! Feminine dresses, blouses and ruffles, and skirts of all kinds, are making a statement in soft and bright spring colors. Fashion authorities are saying that a dress- that's right a dress- is the essential spring wardrobe piece. How much more feminine can you get than a dress? But as the fashion scene will always be, most of these dresses are rather immodest. Short of length, and low cut, it's a bit of a task to find one that falls below the knee, but it can be done, and you're in luck if you're short. As far as low necklines and too-short sleeves, you can always throw on one of the many available stylish jackets and sweaters that are everywhere as well. The picture on the left I grabbed because it show an example of a very cute pink jacket thrown over a yellow dress. I was intrigued by the simplicity, yet elegance of it. Now if we could only get her dress just a couple inches longer....

Our perception of beauty...

Dove did this video, and I think everyone should see it. It really shows you how distorted our American ideal of beauty has become....Do you think what America views as "beauty", do you think that it really exists?

Personally, I think that there is nothing more beautiful than a Godly, modest woman who cares for her own health as well as the health of others. That is beautiful. As far as outward beauty, I think people should do their best with what they have, and look natural. The way God made them to look.

I think people have become so fake in their quest for "beauty". You know when you see a real beautiful person, and you know when you see a fake beautiful person. And of course, there are few things cheaper than a beautiful woman who flaunts flamboyance and immodesty.

There is a quiet, unassuming beauty. There is a modesty, and humility, and grace, that we should all strive for. It does not scream "Look at me, I am beautiful!!!", it doesn't have to. It just is, and that is the beauty of it.

Modesty Rules Of Thumb

In a recent forum discussion about modesty and sports,someone (I wish I could give them credit but I don't know their name) posted this, and I thought it was great.

"I have three rules of thumb that have worked well for making clothing decisions in our house:

1. Modest
2. Gender specific
3. Appropriate for the activity or occasion

That's it. It isn't hard. And if you can't participate in an activity and still be modest, feminine and appropriate, then you probably should choose a different activity."

To those rules I think I would add...

4. Comfortable
5. Stylish (...at least somewhat. We wouldn't want to be modest and look like we just stepped out of a history museum)

Spring Trends 07

Welcome to the new Paulina Carmel Blog, a modest and mod commentary on fashion. If you haven't yet visited our online modest clothing store, please do so here. This blog is to keep you updated on trends, modesty, and modest trends. Spring is such a good place to start...

Spring is right around the corner, and I am ready to throw my winter boots out the window and slip on my flip-flops!

But besides me throwing my cold-weather shoes out of my window, what can you expect to see this Spring/Summer season?

Colors
Look for a lot of icy pink, true red, bright navy blue, white, muted orange, Tarragon green, and Opal gray.

Patterns
Polka dots are everywhere, reminiscent of Minnie Mouse, in red and white, and black and white. Also keep your eyes open for wide horizontal stripes, especially used for tops. Plaid is making it's way back with a vengeance, but don't expect to see to much of it until fall.

Trends that I like...
I have seen a lot of layering going on, which makes us modest people very happy. Many shirts are coming with pieces sewn into the neckline to keep too much skin from showing, and many high-end designers are showing their dresses/tops with camis under them.

Also, skirts and dresses are making a beautiful comeback.

Vintage-style wrap dresses are very cute, and usually modest, just throw a cami on underneath because sometimes the v-neck is too low. Also, this style dress usually ends below the knee. It's a feminine and stylish option if you are tired of denim every day. It can be dressed us and dressed down very easily.
